Most people notice the waves.

Very few notice the undertow.

When we stand at the edge of the ocean, the waves are what we see crashing onto the shore. But beneath the surface, an undertow silently pulls in another direction. It is often invisible until someone realizes they are being carried away.

Scams work much the same way.

The phone call, text message, fake letter, or email is only the wave. It's what everyone notices. The real danger is the undertow beneath it.

Scammers know they don't have to create trust. They simply steal it. They impersonate the companies we already rely on—our banks, delivery services, Medicare, Social Security, utility companies, and retailers. They borrow years, sometimes decades, of someone else's reputation because trust is easier to steal than it is to earn.

When a senior citizen is deceived, the loss isn't measured only in dollars. Something much deeper begins to happen.

The undertow begins to pull.

They begin questioning every phone call. Every piece of mail. Every email. Every knock at the door. Family members become suspicious. Honest businesses struggle to regain confidence. Customer service representatives spend their days proving they are legitimate instead of simply helping people.

The ripple spreads outward while the undertow pulls society inward.

Ironically, the very companies whose names are stolen often suffer alongside the victims. Their reputations are damaged by crimes they never committed. Every fake package notification makes us question the real delivery. Every fraudulent bank alert makes us hesitate before answering a legitimate fraud warning.

Trust begins to erode.

Just like an undertow, the danger isn't always what you can see. It's the unseen current beneath the surface that quietly carries people away from confidence, community, and connection. ✌️ 

The ripple is visible.

The undertow is not.

Yet both have the power to change lives.

Perhaps the greatest challenge of our time isn't simply stopping scammers.

It's rebuilding the trust they leave behind.

When I first started my delivery business in Kansas City, my days were measured in stops, addresses, and signatures. Every package represented another task to complete before moving on to the next one. But over time, I realized I had an opportunity that many people overlook. I wasn't just delivering packages—I was having hundreds of brief interactions with people every week.

As I handed someone a package, instead of ending the conversation with the usual "Have a nice day," I started saying something different.

"Be good."

To me, those two words carried a little more meaning. They weren't about behaving. They were a gentle reminder to choose kindness, patience, honesty, and compassion. They were a wish that the person would do something positive for someone else before the day was over.

At first, most people simply smiled and thanked me.

Then something interesting happened.

Weeks later...then months later...customers began saying it back to me before I even had a chance.

"Be good."

Those two simple words had become part of our routine. I never asked anyone to repeat them. I never explained why I said them. The message simply spread from one interaction to another.

That's how a ripple works.

A single pebble dropped into calm water doesn't look like much. Yet the circles continue expanding long after the splash disappears. We rarely know where they end.

Words can work the same way.

Whether you say, "Be good," "Take care," "Stay safe," or "God bless," what matters isn't the phrase itself. It's the genuine intention behind it. People often remember how you made them feel more than what you actually said.

Looking back, I don't remember every package I delivered.

But I do remember hearing customers smile and say, "Be good."

It reminded me that sometimes the smallest gestures leave the longest-lasting impressions. You may never see where your ripple ends, but that doesn't mean it stopped.

Most people don't think twice about a shopping cart.

After unloading groceries, they give it a gentle push, leave it next to the curb, or wedge it against a light pole. Some convince themselves an employee is paid to collect it anyway.

It's only one cart.

But every ripple begins with one small action.

That single cart might roll into someone's new car on a windy day. It might block the only open parking space for a parent carrying a sleeping child. An elderly shopper may have to walk farther because the nearest cart was left in the middle of the lot. An employee spends another trip retrieving it instead of helping a customer inside the store.

None of those consequences were intended.

Yet they all began with one simple decision.

The same is true in life.

We often believe our choices are too small to matter. One careless word. One shortcut. One lie. One act of kindness. One smile. One shopping cart.

But life doesn't work in isolated moments.

It works in ripples.

Every decision moves outward, touching people we'll probably never meet. Some ripples create frustration. Others create peace. The remarkable part is that we get to choose which kind we leave behind.

Returning a shopping cart won't solve the world's problems.

But it might prevent damage to someone's car. It might make a parent's day a little easier. It might help an employee finish sooner and spend a few extra minutes with their family that evening.

A difference doesn't have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

That's the beauty of the ripple effect.

The smallest actions often travel farther than we'll ever know.

Have you ever wondered how many lives you've influenced without knowing it?

A passing comment.

A simple suggestion.

An observation made over coffee.

A question asked at the right moment.

Most conversations disappear into memory. Others quietly become the beginning of something much larger.

Someone hears an idea.

They think about it.

They improve it.

They share it with someone else.

Soon the original conversation has traveled farther than the people who first spoke the words.

That is the ripple effect.

Many of history's greatest innovations were not created from nothing. They grew from ideas that were exchanged, challenged, refined, and expanded. Every new generation stands on the thoughts of those who came before.

Sometimes your idea returns with your name attached.

Sometimes it returns wearing someone else's.

Either way, the world has changed because you were willing to speak.

That realization changes how we should approach life.

Instead of asking, "Will I receive the credit?" perhaps we should ask, "Will this idea make someone's life better?"

Recognition is temporary.

Influence can last for generations.

The next time you hesitate to share an observation because you fear someone may steal it, remember this:

A pebble doesn't choose which ripples reach the shore.

Its only responsibility is to enter the water.

Your words may become someone else's opportunity.

Your encouragement may become someone else's courage.

When most people think about the economy, they picture giant corporations, Fortune 500 companies, or skyscrapers filled with offices. But the heartbeat of many communities isn't found in those places. It's found on Main Street.

It's the family-owned restaurant where the owner knows your name.

The local hardware store that has the one part you need.

The barber who's been cutting hair for three generations.

The mechanic who stays late because someone needs their car for work tomorrow.

The coffee shop where strangers become regulars and regulars become friends.

Small businesses don't just sell products or services. They create relationships.

Every dollar spent at a local business begins a ripple. That owner pays an employee. The employee buys groceries. The grocery store hires another cashier. That cashier pays a mortgage. The mortgage helps fund another dream. One purchase quietly touches dozens of lives.

The opposite is also true.

When a small business closes, the loss is felt far beyond the empty building. Jobs disappear. Families adjust. Community traditions fade. Another piece of a town's identity quietly slips away.

Many small business owners work longer hours than anyone realizes. They risk their savings, sacrifice weekends, and carry responsibilities most people never see. They aren't just building a business. They're investing in a community they believe in.

The next time you have a choice between buying from a local business or simply choosing the easiest option, remember that your decision creates a ripple.

Paying It Forward

The future is uncertain.

A large part of me wants to stay with my current company, but I don't want to stay in my current role. When I accepted this position, I wasn't chasing a title or a paycheck. I was chasing an opportunity to learn from the best manager I had ever worked for.

Since then, he has moved on to better opportunities, and I couldn't be happier for him. Success should never be something we envy. It should be something we celebrate.

I believe I learned exactly what I needed to learn during the time we worked together. More importantly, I learned things about myself that I had been missing for years. He gave me confidence in areas where I doubted myself. He challenged me without trying to change who I was. He allowed me to think differently, solve problems my own way, and become better because of it.

I wish I could mention him by name, but without his permission, I'll simply say thank you.

You know who you are.

Your investment in me mattered more than you probably realize.

Throughout my life, I've been fortunate to cross paths with many people who have shared their knowledge. Some taught through words. Others taught by example. Some inspired me with their vision. Others showed me what discipline, consistency, and humility look like by simply walking the line every single day.

I've learned that education isn't limited to classrooms. Some of life's greatest teachers never stand behind a podium.

One thing I've discovered about myself is that I'm drawn toward people who excel where I struggle. I study them. I watch how they think, how they react under pressure, and how they solve problems. I don't try to become them. I try to understand what makes them successful so I can grow into a better version of myself.

Truly exceptional people are rare.

Not because talent is rare, but because confidence and understanding are.

Many people quietly set aside their dreams to fulfill their responsibilities. There is honor in that. Families must be cared for. Bills must be paid. Sacrifices are often necessary, and I deeply respect those who make them.

My path has simply been different.

Although I never conceived a biological child of my own, my wife brought children into my life. They have been part of my journey, and I am grateful for the experiences we've shared.

I've also been blessed with a wife who believes in me, supports my sometimes unconventional ideas, and patiently puts up with a mind that's always chasing the next vision.

For that, I am incredibly grateful.

As I look ahead, I honestly don't know what the future holds. I don't know where my career will lead or which doors will open next.

But I do know this.

Everything I know today is the result of someone else's willingness to teach me yesterday.

If I can pass even a fraction of that knowledge on to someone else...

If I can encourage one person who doubts themselves...

If I can help someone discover confidence they didn't know they had...

Then the ripple continues.

None of us create the waves alone.

Every person who has invested in me has created a ripple in my life. My hope is that I can continue that ripple by investing in someone else.

Maybe that's how real greatness is measured—not by what we accomplish for ourselves, but by how many lives become better because we chose to invest in another person.

One person.

One lesson.

One ripple at a time.

The older I become, the more questions I ask.

Our world is filled with different races, religions, languages, cultures, and traditions. We speak differently. We worship differently. We celebrate differently. We see life through different experiences.

Yet I keep coming back to one question:

Why do our differences create division instead of curiosity?

Growing up, I learned the story of Adam and Eve. Later, I studied science, genetics, and the history of civilization. Those lessons didn't eliminate my questions—they created more of them.

How did humanity begin?

How are we all connected?

Can faith and science coexist?

I don't pretend to have all the answers. I simply believe that asking honest questions helps us grow.

One thing I do know is this:

Every person on this planet laughs.

Every person cries.

Every person experiences joy, loss, fear, hope, love, and disappointment.

No matter where we were born, what language we speak, or what we believe, we all experience what it means to be human.

So why do hatred and prejudice continue to ripple through generation after generation?

A child is not born hating another race.

A child is not born hating another religion.

A child is not born hating another culture.

Those ideas are learned.

And if hatred can be learned, perhaps understanding can be learned as well.

That is the Ripple Effect.

Every conversation matters.

Every act of kindness matters.

Every insult matters.

Every rumor matters.

Every lesson we teach our children matters.

What begins as one person's words can influence a family. A family can influence a neighborhood. A neighborhood can influence a community. A community can influence a nation.

The same is true for compassion.

One smile.

One helping hand.

One respectful conversation.

One willingness to listen instead of judge.

Those actions ripple outward just as powerfully.

Imagine if we spent less time trying to prove that someone else is wrong and more time trying to understand why they believe what they believe.

We don't have to agree on everything to treat one another with dignity.

Peace is not created by governments alone.

It begins with ordinary people making extraordinary choices every day.

The next ripple belongs to each of us.
