THE RIPPLE EFFECT
The ECHO — Fourth Perspective
WHAT DID WE LEARN TO HIDE?
We pack emotions away.
Then we push them down.
Sometimes with our hands.
Sometimes with our feet.
Sometimes it takes a hammer.
A tamper.
A steamroller.
Anything we can find to keep those emotions buried and out of the public eye.
Why?
Because somewhere along the way, many of us learned that showing emotion meant showing weakness.
Don't cry.
Toughen up.
Get over it.
Keep moving.
Actions mean more than words.
I heard those lessons.
Maybe you did too.
Maybe you didn't.
And that is where things become interesting.
Because you and I can look at the exact same thing and see something completely different.
A black-and-white photograph doesn't change depending on who holds it.
But its meaning can.
You might notice the person standing in the center.
I might notice the empty chair in the corner.
Someone else sees the shadows.
Another person wonders who was behind the camera.
Same photograph.
Different questions.
Different emotions.
Different interpretations.
Maybe life works the same way.
We like black and white because they feel certain.
Right or wrong.
Good or bad.
Success or failure.
Peace or conflict.
But I have spent much of my life somewhere between them.
The gray line.
That doesn't mean I don't believe there is right and wrong.
It means I have questions about everything that happens between the two.
Why did someone make that decision?
What happened before the moment we witnessed?
What aren't we seeing?
What would this look like through somebody else's eyes?
I don't have the answers.
All I have are questions.
And sometimes my emotions get ahead of those questions.
I get frustrated.
I get angry.
I misunderstand people.
People misunderstand me.
I say I believe in PEACE4ALLMANKIND.
I truly believe it.
But are my actions always showing it?
NO!
That's difficult for me to admit.
Because I was taught that actions mean more than words.
So writing PEACE4ALLMANKIND isn't enough.
I have to learn how to live it.
That doesn't require you to think like me.
Believe what I believe.
Vote like me.
Pray like me.
Look like me.
Love like me.
Or see the same photograph that I see.
You are another human being trying to understand this strange thing called life.
So am I.
Maybe peace doesn't begin when everybody finally agrees.
Maybe it begins when two people can see the same thing differently and still recognize the humanity standing across from them.
One person tries.
Someone notices.
Maybe they try too.
Then another.
Then another.
That's the ripple.
Black and white may give us the picture.
Gray gives us somewhere to look deeper.
I don't walk the gray line because I have the answers.
I walk the gray line because that's where I find the questions. ✌️
